Today, I got an e-mail update from YES! Magazine. The theme of the current issue is on water use and conservation.
Articles point out how much more water countries of the industrial world use, compared to the developing world.
What really struck me was a graphic pie chart that showed the uses of water.
Notice that the amount of water used for laundry is almost identical to that used in toilets!
For some time now, I have been filtering and storing laundry water to flush the toilet. The system is mostly automatic. What’s really weird is that whenever we need more water for the toilet, there’s exactly another load of laundry to be done. In the pie chart, laundry and toilet together equal almost exactly half of ALL WATER USE!
By flushing the toilet with the “waste”-water of the clothes washer, I save 25% water use, and am NOT flushing drinking water down the drain.

Interesting that the pie chart doesn’t include landscape irrigation (non-farmland). I wonder where that slice would fit…
Hi Ben,
Sorry, this isn’t related to a solar project. I found your posts while searching for mirror tiles..
We’re doing a project using alot of acrylic/plastic mirror, and have been trying to source it in a pre-used state rather than new, for financial reasons and a re-use ethos.
We were wondering if you have used those 2′x2′ tiles already? If not, would you be interested in selling or donating them to our project? It’s an un-commissioned group installation that we’re doing for burning man. The related blog is listed with this email if you’d like to have a look.
We look forward to hearing from you
Thanks
Kirsten Berg and Mitchell Gold
